Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that's triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event.
Keep in the look out for
Flashbacks
Recurrent, involuntary memories, images, or distressing dreams related to the traumatic event.
Avoidance
Avoiding reminders, thoughts, or conversations associated with the traumatic event, including places, people, or activities.
Hyperarousal
Experiencing heightened arousal, such as increased irritability, difficulty concentrating, insomnia, or an exaggerated startle response.
Negative Changes in Thoughts and Mood
Negative changes in thoughts and mood, including persistent negative beliefs about oneself or the world, persistent feelings of guilt, shame, or detachment.
Recurrent Nightmares
Recurrent nightmares related to the traumatic event, causing distress during sleep.
Hypervigilance
Being hyperaware of surroundings, often accompanied by a constant sense of danger or being on edge.
